I'm no hero. Never was. Never will be.

Fiat says its fuel-saving MultiAir technology is not for sale
    Luca Ciferri
    Automotive News Europe
    March 4, 2009 17:01 CET
Alfa Romeo will offer MultiAir on the MiTo.
GENEVA - Fiat considers its MultiAir variable valve timing technology a breakthrough application with the same potential impact of its 1997 common-rail diesel injection technology - but the Italian group will retain intellectual property right to the system.
Fiat developed and patented common-rail engine technology but sold it to Robert Bosch in the early 1990's in the middle of a financial crisis.
"MultiAir is available to other automakers as (complete) engines and as technology under license, but intellectual property for the system will remain within Fiat Powertrain Technology," said Alfredo Altavilla, CEO of Fiat Powertrain Technologies (FTP).
Altavilla said MultiAir technology is part of the technical cooperation talks Fiat is current having with BMW Group and Chrysler.
Rinaldo Rinolfi, FPT's chief technical officer, said MultiAir increases power 10 percent while decreasing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 10 percent.
"For MultiAir, we preferred an electro-hydraulic valve actuation technology because it is cheaper than electromagnetic and electromechanical systems. It can also be applied to diesel engines," Rinolfi said.
FPT hopes MultiAir technology will reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 60 percent so that engines using the technology will not need a liquid additive to meet new Euro 6 emissions standards.
Alfa Romeo will be the first brand to offer MultiAir on a 1.4-liter gasoline engine in its MiTo small car, starting in April.
FPT and Alfa declined to disclose the added manufacturing cost or customer price premium for a vehicle equipped with MultiAir.
MultiAir technology will progressively spread out on all Fiat engines. The next application will come in 2009 on a new 900c two-cylinder engine, which will equip mini- and small-segment cars.
FPT last year built 2.9 million engines, generating 7 billion euros in revenue, of which more than 26 percent from outside clients.

:/ chissà per il diesel quanto ci vorrà....
