Hello All,
First, I’d like to thank you for your support for Marvel Heroes. We appreciate it. As you have undoubtedly noticed, we have a lot of good people working to iterate and improve the game daily.
I want to emphasize that Marvel Heroes has an incredibly long term commitment from us. It’s our labor of love and we are working every day to improve and evolve it. We plan to be around for many years and we are investing in the game and the team with that mindset.
There is a ton to do, both in improving our current content and adding the huge amount of content we have planned. We’ll keep updating you with our plans as they get closer.
Today though, I have an announcement I wanted to get to you as soon as possible, regarding our new free hero system.
As you know, our current system awards hero tokens as random item drops throughout the game. We’ve always liked the idea of getting heroes from item drops, since rare loot drops are very exciting and a core part of RPGs. However, we’ve decided the system we are currently using is not as fun as it could be for everyone.
Here’s an example of something we’re seeing in game. One player, let’s call him “Logan”, might play for many hours, clawing his way to level 35 over a two-week period. The random-number gods are unkind to him and he gets zero hero drops. Another player, let’s call him “Remy”, also levels his hero to 35, but Lady Luck smiles upon Remy and he gets a lucky seven hero drops over the same two-week time period. Remy is a looting ace! Unfortunately Remy really wanted Wolverine to drop, but didn’t get that lucky - none of his seven hero drops were Wolverine. So, even with his amazing luck, he is still unhappy. He wanted to play Wolverine.
This isn’t the experience we want for players.
The best loot should be challenging to acquire, but we don’t want players to be overly frustrated with the process of acquiring heroes.
With that in mind, we are making these changes:
Every enemy in the game will now have a chance to drop a new item called an Eternity Splinter.
Players will be able to earn the exact hero they want using Eternity Splinters as currency.
Enemies will have a much higher chance of dropping an individual Eternity Splinter than they did a hero token, making the process of collecting splinters (and therefore, heroes) much more consistent for players over time.
For Example: If you spend an evening playing the game and collecting splinters, it’s very likely you’ll collect roughly the same amount of splinters the next evening.
Eventually, by collecting splinters, every player can earn every hero for free.
That’s it. A simple system that relies less on chance, and gives the player more control. For more information, head over to our Eternity Splinters FAQ.
We intend to pace the collection of heroes in a similar manner to other games using this system, although adding new heroes to Marvel Heroes may take a little longer compared to other games. It takes an immense amount of work to create a new hero in Marvel Heroes, with design, animation, sound and programming associated with 20+ powers per hero.
However, our goal is to be incredibly player-focused in everything we do. I believe it is worthwhile to make sacrifices in potential short-term sales to make the game more fun and less frustrating for players. I believe happy players will eventually invest in a game they enjoy, so our number one priority must be removing areas of frustration and devoting our resources into making the game fun.
We want to launch this system as soon as possible, but we want to be sure it’s thoroughly tested – and we’re going to ask for your help on that. While we finish up the programming and interface work involved, we’re also working on launching a new Test Center Server so that you can test Eternity Splinters before they arrive on the live servers. After we’ve tested and responded to your feedback, we’ll put Eternity Splinters into the live game. Until then, you can still get free hero tokens as drops throughout the game.
The new Eternity Splinter system will also have other uses. For example, a way for people to level their Ultimate Powers or respec or even ‘restart’ your heroes.
We’re not stopping there, though! Work is ongoing on hero powers, new items, PVP modes, additional difficulty levels, new PVE options, new villains, new heroes and various system updates, including plans to address melee/defense survivability once and for all.
Our goal is to provide you with an incredibly player-focused, but challenging experience in Marvel Heroes. If something can be improved, we are not afraid to talk with you about it and make changes. We will continue to do so until everything about Marvel Heroes is the best it can possibly be. These are the first steps on a long journey.
Again, thank you for playing Marvel Heroes. The team and I have a tremendous commitment to making your play experience nothing short of amazing. It is the deepest privilege to be part of making a game for you to enjoy – there is no better job in the world.
