"Folks,
Just so you know, 200K new beta signups in 10 days absolutely makes us one of the fastest MMORPGs to hit that number. According to Blizzard, they had a higher number by the time they closed off their beta page but it was 400K from US, Canada and Korea, and that number included a lot of duplicates (they estimated that they had about 275K valid signups). Turbine, with LoTRO, also did not hit 200K in that same amount of time. According to their own press releases, it took them 4 months (from May to August 2006) to hit "nearly 200K" In terms of AoC, we haven't seen any announcement/press release from them regarding 250K or even 200K so anyone so we have to go with the number that has been announced by the company itself. WoW's beta numbers in Europe were also quite high but they launched the European beta after the US beta. No other Western MMORPG company (again, except Blizzard), at least from what we could find on the Web, press releases, etc. beat our number in that same period of time. So, I think we are doing really, really well even in comparison to Blizzard.
FYI, when you look at the number of people who volunteer to enter closed beta testing for any game, if the game turns out to be a good one, it is always way, way below the number of units sold. Even the latest Halo game, which I think broke all records for a beta test, only got a fraction of the number that Microsoft expects to sell of the game. The same of course, held true from WoW. One prospective beta tester does not equal one customer, it just doesn't work that way if the game is any good and any one who says otherwise, really doesn't know what they are talking about. OTOH, if the game sucks, well, then you might wish it was on a one to one basis. As always, this stuff doesn't mean anything unless we make a great game.
No matter how you look at the numbers, the 200K that we received in the first 10 days is a heck of an accomplishment and considering that the numbers continue grow every day, means that we are burning up the track on the way to launch. Just so you know, my initial goal, when we laid out the plan for beta last year, was to reach 150K 6 months before projected launch (thus equaling about 1/2 of WoW's numbers). The fact that we hit 200K at this point when we haven't hit the 6 month window (obviously) means that we have surpassed my initial expectations. Also, since the numbers are continuing to climb daily, I eagerly look forward to our next milestone, 300K.
If you do a search on the numbers mentioned here regarding WoW, Funcom, Turbine, etc. you'll find tons of links to the actual numbers, articles and interviews with the devs backing up what I've said here and what we said in our release. You can also go to their websites and find all the information I talked about here.
