    Alert Water Bug

The original post follows this helpful announcement.

    1) NO ONE was banned for the water bug.

    2) A bunch of people were banned for speed hacking, and they were caught NOWHERE NEAR the water.

    3) If you cheat in a video game, you are in fact something less than a good person. Sorry.

    4) If you do not cheat in video games, you may continue reading in the blissful assurance that none of the following applies to you.

We banned a bunch of speed hackers this week. I wasn't planning to mention it, because it was only about a dozen losers... er, people. The usual protestations and message board dramas are, as always, afoot. And since I'm going to be out of town tomorrow and therefore not doing a grab bag where I could drop a comment, I thought I'd better post.

The number one rumor about the speed hack bans is that the poor, innocent cheaters... cheese, I keep DOING that, I mean "people"... weren't really cheating, but simply abusing... AARGH, I mean USING... a known bug with the game. And that the CSR who banned them was too ignorant to know the difference. That's the story, anyway.

It's a simple bug, and one we've known about for awhile. It's scheduled for a fix in the next version. I'm not going to spell it out in detail just in case there are players who are not aware of the bug. Basically, if you're injured, you're supposed to slow down when you swim, the way avatars run slower on land when they're mostly dead. But in some parts of the game, you don't slow down, not if you're abusing the bug. You don't move FASTER than normal, either. That's the problem, there's no speed modifier at all for your injury.

The story goes that the CSR sees the scumbag... person... swimming at speed even though he's almost dead and assumes he's using a speedhack. This is just funny. We use BOTH observation and technology to detect cheaters. When the idiot cheating is moving faster than god speed, we suspend for seven days. (Yes, faster than god speed. Not faster than normal speed.) But we don't perma-ban until we use our technology to prove that the moron with the suspension was indeed cheating.

That's why you see reports on the boards that people got seven days suspensions and THEN bans, and why on very rare occasions you see people with seven day suspensions and no bans.

Of course, I would never say no bugs exist, I'm too old and cranky to say NEVER. If you can prove that you can move as fast as god speed, and you're the first to appeal it with instructions we can duplicate, there's a free lifetime account reward. That account is always flagged for beta as well.

Anyway, sorry to bore everyone with this minor issue. I just didn't want to leave any entertaining drama behind while I was out of town. Have a good weekend, everyone!
